'Crazy For You' dances up a storm at Theatre-By-The-Sea
Sure, the musical is dated, the story is typical boy-meets-girl, and the jokes are as corny as could be. But what’s wrong with a little nostalgia, peppered with good feelings and hope?
Sean Montgomery, making his TBTS debut, is the perfect Bobby Child, the son of a wealthy banking family in the 1930s whose dream is to become a dancer. Montgomery can sing, dance and act with the best of them. At times, he reminded me of a young Gene Kelly, tapping up a storm and moving with class in the slower dance routines.
There is a touch of the present in the plot, as Bobby is sent to the sleepy town of Bedrock, Nev. to foreclose on a closed down theatre, having to deal with the owner’s spunky daughter. It is love at first sight for Bobby and hate at first sight for Polly, who blames him for the foreclosure.
You don’t need an atlas to see where this one is going, but you will enjoy a number of stops along the way. The jokes come fast and furious, with more groaners than an old vaudeville show.
Bobby impersonates the famous producer, Bela Zangler, promising to engage the locals in “putting on a show” and saving the theatre. He woos Polly, but she falls in love with his alter-ego, and when the real Bela shows up all hell breaks loose.
There are some memorable classics, like “Embraceable You,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and “I’ve Got Rhythm.”
The choreography by Barbara Hartwig is as good as Broadway, a major feat for the small Matunuck stage. “Slap That Bass” and “I’ve Got Rhythm” brought down the house. Sets by Kenneth J. Martin (built under the direction of Cranston’s own Nick Nevola) are clever and way above what you would expect, sliding in and out with precision during the 15 set changes.
There are funny references to the future. One character proclaims, “Who would open a casino in Nevada?” And the British couple who come to review the local tavern are named Fodor.
If you have a yen for some good old-fashioned (corny) humor with a love story and lots of schtick thrown in, “Crazy For You” is the perfect medicine.
Come to the Cabaret
Late Night Cabaret, following the performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, is hosted by Miss Sabrina Blaze, aka Wayne Alan Hawkins, a well-known figure in Rhode Island.
He opens with the title song from “Cabaret,” then changes on stage into three outlandish gowns, emceeing a host of singers from the show, before closing with a terrific Carol Channing impression.
A warning (or maybe an enticement): Sabrina is downright raunchy. This is not for kids or the easily offended. The joy of the cabaret is hearing some of the supporting actors sing their favorite show tunes.
There is a cover for the show. Food and drinks are available, and reservations are strongly recommended. Dinner is served in the Bistro Tuesday through Sunday evenings. For reservations to the Bistro and Cabaret, call 789-3030 after 3 p.m. For reservations to “Crazy For You,” call 782-8587. The musical is at Theatre-By-The-Sea through July 11.
