I congratulate Mr. Cote on having prompted the legislature to look at the inequity in the automobile tax situation.

However, I also realize that this tax is merely one element of a revenue stream made up of all the taxes and fees we pay in order to support government spending. Unless expenditures are cut, the revenues currently generated by an automobile tax reduction will be made up by increases either in the tax rate on automobiles or by an increase in some other tax or fee.

While Representative McNamara's proposed legislation sounds good and will probably get a few votes, I would urge him to propose accompanying budget cuts that would equal the revenue loss at the state level, and the repeal of unfunded mandates on municipalities to enable cities and towns to reduce their budgets as well.
