The School committee of the last 5 years has closed 3 schools and repurposed 1 to save millions. No school in Warwick had been closed for 20 years or more before that time period. If the committees of the past had looked at enrollment all along there would be no need to make drastic changes. This is why the current School Committee now has a Short Term Facilities Planning COmmittee and a Long Term Facilities Planning Committee. Both committees are made up of unpaid volunteers from the community. These committees will sort through the information and make a recommendation to the School Committee to close a school. Rather than complain that things are moving to slowly, please volunteer to be on the unpaid committee, spend your time away from family and be criticized for moving too slowly. Be yelled at by other members of your neighborhood for being the one to choose to close the school in your neighborhood... Sounds like fun, doesn't it? It is a thankless job but one that is important. The correct decision must be made with the correct information. It can not be made quickly. The decision to close a school will not lead to immediate savings either. The savings will be made in not having to maintain the building. The teachers and staff will be moved to another school and classroom numbers will go up slightly.

The reason school enrollment is down is because people are leaving Warwick and RI. If things in RI and Warwick do not change, there will be no one left and no reason for schools. Unemployment is still one of the highest in the country and RI is on the threshold to lose a Representative in Congress with the population being so low.
