Four years ago schools were 68% of the budget, now they are 55% of the budget. That is a huge shift. Each year taxes go up and the city, not the schools gets the entire new funding. The School Budget is at the same level it was at in 2008. The city budget has grown an additional $30 million annually during the same time period. The schools have made tough choices in the last 4 years. I will assume they will need funding for additional safety policies and procedures now in addition to meeting fire code standards, please attend the school and city budget hearings in March and April to make your voice heard loud and clear. The school committee has closed schools and will continue to close schools. Closing the right schools is the right thing to do. With the airport expansion putting things in limbo for 10 years, it was difficult to get it done but it was done. All of the meetings are public meetings but few attend. All meetings are posted online at the Secretary of State website. The city and the schools need to do the right thing, stop pointing fingers at each other and make decisions in the best interest of the taxpayers.
