The proverbial push and pull over the budget has begun, only this year the prospect of a last minute windfall in state funds or an adjustment in teacher pension funding appears slim.
After meeting for about an hour on Friday with Mayor Scott Avedisian, Superintendent Robert Shapiro concluded the mayor is being reasonable, although if additional school funding does not become available, the school committee will have to go back to the drawing board and trim $1.2 million from the $131.4 million budget.
“I understand his position, this has been a difficult year,” Shapiro said of the mayor. Shapiro aims to make his pitch to state legislators in hopes they will increase what Gov. Lincoln Almond allocated for Warwick schools.
