12th Annual Providence Improv Festival set for Sept. 17-19

The 12th Annual Providence Improv Festival, will be taking place at AS220 Black Box at 95 Empire St. and AS220 Main Stage at 115 Empire St., in downtown Providence on September 17-19.  This year’s fest will feature top improv comedy troupes from New York City, Chicago, Austin, Boston, Hartford, Vermont, and of course Rhode Island.  P!F is also delighted to once again welcome a Fest favorite, the Oxford Imps from Oxford, England.

As with past Fest improv celebrations, the groups range in variety from the sophisticated short-form of the Oxford Imps, to fast-paced, witty hiphop of North Coast and the longer formats of Airwolf (both of NYC).  New this year is Austin’s The Black Vault – whose format has been described as “Lovecraft Improv” – or storytelling in the style of one of Providence’s favorite literary sons. Another P!F first is The Raving Jaynes (NYC), who combine dance and physical improv, as well as basic scenework to create a unique and exciting improv experience.

Local favorites include The Providence Improv Guild, Improv Jones, Bring Your Own Improv, SkyPunch, The Bit Players and Speed of Thought Players.

The Fest this year is also thrilled to be offering workshops by Jimmy Carrane (Chicago), and by the excellent Magnet Theater’s Rick Andrews (NYC). As improv junkies know, Carrane is the force behind the Improv Nerd Podcast, as well as the author of Improvising Better  and Improv Therapy. In addition to teaching a workshop, he will be recording two live podcasts at this year’s Fest.

Improv audiences know Rick Andrews as a seasoned performer and longtime instructor.  Besides teaching his workshop, Andrews is a featured headliner in the Fest, working with Louis Kornfield as Kornfield & Andrews, to create stories through a “patient, nuanced style” of narrative building.

As with last year’s P!F, there will be a Family Friendly Show on Sept. 19.

“This year’s festival will showcase a wide array of talents providing fans the ability to see laughs in many different styles in the art of improv.  From dance & movement, to singing, to hip hop, to horror, to improv theory, and to the outrageous.  There is something for everyone at this years fest,” saidTim Thibodeau, Providence Improv Fest Producer.
