13th Annual CJ Buckley 420 Team Race Regatta to be held Aug. 3-5

The 13th Annual CJ Buckley 420 Team Race Regatta, hosted by the East Greenwich Yacht Club and Greenwich Bay Sailing Association, will be held from Aug. 3-5. The regatta is designated as the 2015 Club 420 Jr. Team Race National Championship by the Club 420 Association.

The CJ Buckley Regatta began in 2003. It is held in memory of CJ Buckley, a junior sailor who passed away in December 2002 from an inoperable brain tumor.

The regatta will be based at the beach and carousel building at Goddard Park. Over 30 teams are expected to compete in the three-day event (90 boats, 180 sailors 18 years and under).

Over 75 dedicated volunteers, including many of CJ’s former teammates and coaches, family and friends, and volunteers from the Joe Andruzzi Foundation (joeandruzzifoundation.org) run 150 races, make over 1000 lunches and coordinate the entire event.

Sailors race two-person “dinghy” sailboats called Club 420’s. The team racing format specifies that a team of three boats tries to out-maneuver the opposing team using the racing rules of sailing to achieve the lowest finishing scores. Sailing ability combines with strategy like a game of chess on the water. Additional information can be found on the regatta website: cjbuckleyregatta.net.
