A man police say is a top gang member is facing charges after the Cranston Police Special Investigations Unit seized 18 pounds of marijuana in a Tuesday bust.

Nirandone Sitthirath, 36, of 35 Wolfe St. in Providence, is charged with possession with intent to deliver over five kilos of marijuana. He was arraigned and ordered held without bail as a Superior Court probation violator.

Sitthirath is “regarded as a high-ranking member of the Young Bloods gang,” according to a news release from Police Maj. Robert Ryan.

The arrest came after police received a tip and developed information indicating that marijuana would be delivered to an address on Jordan Avenue, according to Ryan’s release. Surveillance was put in place, and just after 9:30 a.m. a large package was delivered to the home and left on the stairs by the side door.

Then, at 2 p.m., a man driving a 2011 Toyota stopped at the home, picked up the package and placed it in the vehicle’s trunk before departing. The car was followed and stopped in the 1100 block of Cranston Street by Patrol Officers Brandon Barth and Alex Travers.

Ryan reports that Barth approached the vehicle and observed that the driver appeared nervous. The officer also detected the odor of marijuana coming from the car.

K-9 Officer Gregg Bruno and his dog Bosco were then called to the scene, Ryan reports. After the dog alerted to the presence of illegal substances, officers located the package from the Jordan Avenue home in the trunk. It was found to contain two bales of marijuana, each weighing nine pounds.

In addition to the drugs, police seized just under $700 found in Sitthirath’s possession and the Toyota he was driving.
