Last night’s record $1.5 billion PowerBall jackpot may not have been won by a Rhode Islander, but a few Ocean State residents did hit it big.

Two $1 million tickets were sold – one at Colbea Enterprises at 1207 Pontiac Ave. in Cranston, and the other at Conimicut Liquors at 1230 West Shore Road in Warwick. The $1 million prize is for matching five numbers.

A $50,000 ticket was sold at the Stop & Shop at 575 Greenwich Ave. in Warwick.

Four other high-tier winning tickets were sold in Rhode Island.

Two $100,000 winners were sold – one at the Stop & Shop at 333 West River St. in Providence, and the other at Tavares News at 30 High St. in Pawtucket.

John Diggle of Greenville has claimed the prize for the ticket sold in Pawtucket. His ticket matched four numbers and the PowerBall number, and he paid an extra dollar for the PowerPlay option, multiplying his prize by two for the $100,000 total.

A 40-year National Grid employee, Diggle told the Rhode Island Lottery he would save the money for retirement.

Another $50,000 ticket was sold at the Stop & Shop at 900 Tiogue Ave. in Coventry. A Coventry man, who is a 20-year Navy veteran, has already claimed that prize.

None of the other high-tier tickets had been claimed as of late Thursday morning. Overall, the Rhode Island Lottery said $2,762,716 was won in the state, with 89,984 winning tickets sold.

Three winning tickets were sold for the record jackpot, in California, Florida, and Texas.

I don't know why any high-sum winner would let the Lottery Commission release their name- every relative, friend, neighbor & charity is going to come out of the woodwork asking for help. I hope he has a wood stove or fireplace to burn all the solicitations he receives.

The jackpot amount was unbelievable; what an obscene amount of money to suddenly possess, though I like to think about how many family, friends and (anonymously) strangers I could help with a multi-million jackpot.

It's RI law that the name of winners must be disclosed to the public.
