2014 election on GOP agenda

The 2014 Election is already on the minds of some Warwick Republicans.

The election will be the topic June 17 when the Warwick GOP Committee meets at the 1800 Post Road Avedisian Headquarters. Speakers will be Rhody Young Republicans President Barbara Ann Fenton, City Committee Vice Chairwoman Chris Allen, and Treasurer Joe Weaver.

According to Committee Chairman Michael Penta, getting people involved for the 2014 election year is of utmost importance.

“Basically what I’m trying to do,” Penta said, “is get the people back involved, trying to get as many people to come as possible. I’m trying to get my committee to get involved and start getting some fundraisers.”

“We want to try and invest a couple hundred and get back a few thousand by purchasing a product and have each person in our committee sell them. This is trying to build the pot up a little right now, but in the future I want to have fundraisers at my home and have everyone eat, swim and have fun,” he continued.

Fenton has also set a goal of recruiting more people as well, but she’s specifically looking at people in their late 20s and early 30s, maybe even younger.

“I was invited to talk about recruiting more young people into the party. There’s a huge generational rift in the GOP and many of the older generation are not fine with same-sex marriage, and those of us who are younger are fine with that. We’re just talking about some different programming and seeing what works to get more young kids in,” she said.

Fenton attributes some of the success of her organization to the fact that they provide a welcoming environment to new members.

“We’re more of an issues-based organization and we’re presenting them in a more non-threatening sort of way, giving thoughtful discussions and promoting the tolerance base,” she said.

Penta is glad to have Fenton speaking at the meeting, so that the Warwick GOP can gain some new, younger members.

“I think personally that’s something we need to do. We need to bring some new Republicans in and build the party up,” he said.
