(Vulgar, sophomoric buddy movie)

My friend, sportswriter Bill Reynolds, pretty much sums up our feelings about this vulgar, sophomoric, buddy movie: “I can’t stand to watch the promos for ‘22 Jump Street,’ let alone the movie.”

Channing Tatum (Jenko) and Jonah Hill (Schmidt) are back as the idiot cops who went undercover in high school, caused havoc and came out smelling like roses. This time they pose as college students in order to bust a drug ring. They look as much like college guys as they looked like high schoolers. They quickly catch on to college life, attending frat parties, drinking lots of beer, hooking up with girls, and generally acting stupid.

Their relationship is strained when Jenko becomes close pals with the star football quarterback and becomes his key receiver. Meanwhile, Schmidt hooks up unknowingly with his Captain’s daughter. Ice Cube overplays the Captain, but then everyone overplays their parts.

The buddies play their roles close to the edge, with hints (or are they parodies?) of a homosexual relationship. Lines like “I think we should investigate other people” slip into the conversations.

The humor is mostly below the belt, filled with gross sight gags, lots of chases and a ridiculous ending. There is a clever sequence during the credits, as the movie explores future possibilities, such as 24 medical school, 25 veterinary school, and on and on. Heaven forbid!

Rated a big R, with constant profanity, sex, drugs, nudity and violence.
