250 vehicles expected at Quonset ‘touch-a-truck’ event Saturday

This Saturday, Boy Scouts in Troop 31 Crompton and Cub Scouts in Pack 13 Centreville and Pack 17 Blackrock will take over 53 acres of Quonset Business Park for a fundraiser to give back to the community.

The scouts are hosting a Touch-A-Truck event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., open to people of all ages, in an effort to raise money for the Rhode Island Military Relief Fund. The fund provides financial support to families whose loved ones are deployed overseas.

Military and police vehicles, fire trucks, construction equipment, and National Guard Air Show equipment will be on display for children and adults of all ages to go inside. Because of Quonset Point’s railroad tracks, train equipment from Amtrak, MBTA and the Providence-Worcester Railroad will also be on display. The North Kingstown Fire Department will be hosting a “Jaws of Life” demonstration at 11 a.m., showing off their lifesaving equipment.

In a recent development, the Scouts were able to negotiate an appearance by the “Weinermobile.” The event will feature a raffle that gives one lucky winner a drive around in Oscar Meyer’s illustrious vehicle.

Warwick resident Jim O’Connell, who is serving as event coordinator, says a number of organizations has stepped up to help provide other means of support. Moving companies, racing teams and the RI Patriot Guard will all be attending. A group of local veterans who often volunteer at military events will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and sausage and peppers throughout the day. All of the proceeds will be given as part of the donation to the RI Military Relief Fund. ReMax is bringing a hot air balloon, providing tethered rides in exchange for donations. Estimates state that around 250 vehicles will be on display.

The cost to attend is $10 per vehicle, regardless of the number of people in the car, and all event proceeds will go to the Rhode Island Military Relief Fund.

“If anyone has anything to show off, please bring it,” said O’Connell. The invitation is out there for everyone.” If you have an antique vehicle or any interesting object to display, do not hesitate to bring it to the fundraiser.

Also, in celebration of Mother’s Day weekend, all mothers attending the event will be treated to a special surprise.

The Boy Scouts Touch-A-Truck fundraiser at Quonset Business Park is a fun event for the whole family and is a fantastic way to help give back to the local community and support a great cause.
