27,000 customers lose electricity

Posted

As of yesterday afternoon National Grid was still tracking down the cause of an equipment failure that put more than 27,000 Warwick and West Warwick electric customers without power at 2:15 p.m.

National Grid spokesman David Graves said the Drum Rock substation lost the “entire power feed.” Graves was contacted shortly after the Beacon started receiving calls from the affected area.

He said crews were in the area and would immediately start switching so as to restore power.

Asked if he thought yesterday’s warm weather was a contributing factor, as power demand increases with the use of air conditioning, Graves doubted that was a cause. He said out of all the 1.7 million New England customers serviced by National Grid, only 3,000 other than the 27,000 in Rhode Island were reporting the loss of power.
