Six women of various ages sit on stage reading from scripts written by Nora and Delia Ephron, taken from a book by Ilene Beckerman.

The compilation of monologues and memories, described by Director Lynne Collinson as a “Top to toe woman’s project” titled “Love, Loss and What I Wore” sounded like something my wife might enjoy, but held little interest for me. Surprise! Both Joyce and I loved it.

The authors covered just about every reference, cliché and truism related to a woman’s obsession with clothes, using that theme to relate humorous and poignant moments about loves and losses in their own lives. Tales of hats, bras, dresses, wedding gowns, shoes and boots were woven into the fabric of the personal lives of a composite of women from birth to death, top to bottom.

While the six actors had the scripts in front of them, they only occasionally referred to them, looking into the faces of their peers and the audience, interacting with conviction and confidence.

They kept the audience laughing at the obvious, making both clichés and truisms hit home for the women in the audience and their significant others. I nudged Joyce more than once when one actress told about the items in her purse and another about the excess of clothes in her closet.

For the most part, the six actresses shared equal time, with Joanne Fayan serving as the catalyst and enjoying some of the juicier lines, aided by drawings of her earlier dresses (the first was a Brownie outfit) projected in the background.

Tanya Anderson, Joan Batting, Pam Faulkner, Laura Sorensen and Valerie Westgate all had their moments in this unique production that never slowed down over its hour and a half presentation.

While it is a play about women, acted by women with a woman director, men will share the humor and poignancy and many of the experiences that they have shared with the women in their lives.
