3 new buses added to Transwick fleet

Mayor Scott Avedisian, Meg Underwood, director of Warwick Senior Services, and Deborah Higgins, transportation planner, unveiled three new Transwick buses Friday at the Pilgrim Senior Center.

The new buses include a 16-passenger bus and two 12-passenger buses. All three buses are outfitted with wheelchair lifts and include space for two wheelchairs.

In a statement Avedisian said, “Throughout the course of my administration, we have been dedicated to providing our seniors and adults who are disabled with the tools they need to lead fulfilling lives. Our Transwick program continues to provide quality transportation service to scores of residents each week. These new buses will contribute to our ongoing efforts to assist those who are most vulnerable to maintain their independence and greet each new day with promise.”

Underwood said, “The new, smaller buses will be used for trips with fewer seniors and will help us reduce fuel costs while enabling us to provide the same great transportation service to Warwick’s senior and adult disabled population. We are very proud of the services we provide to our most vulnerable residents. It is our mission to help seniors age in place with dignity, and our Transwick system is an integral component in achieving that mission.”

The vehicles were purchased through the city’s lease-purchase program. Total cost is $153,089. In existence since 1988, the Transwick program now features seven vehicles in its fleet. Transwick provides 720 rides each week. Services include trips to local grocery stores, the Pilgrim Senior Center, the Warwick Public Library, retail shopping and recreational sites, as well as monthly pharmacy and banking trips, to name just a few.
