3 star Hendricken athletes sign letters of intent

Three Bishop Hendricken star athletes signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday afternoon in the Harrop Theater at Hendricken.

Sean Meehan will run track at Providence College, Harry Antone will join the track & field team at St. Joseph’s University and wrestling Co-captain Devin Rivet will take his skills to Campbell University.

Meehan was captain of Hendricken’s 2017 RI State Champion Cross Country team and made All-State in both Cross Country and Outdoor Track. He was also awarded the state’s Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Meehan had some big footsteps to follow with his brother Ryan, who was an All-State runner and student athlete for the Hawks before moving on to Harvard where he does track & field.

“The difficult part for Sean is following in his brother’s footsteps athletically,” Hendricken Outdoor Track & Field coach Jim Doyle said. “That wasn’t easy. It took a tremendous amount of desire and dedication and work ethic on his part to become an All-State athlete.”

The four years flew by for Meehan.

“It feels like yesterday when I was just starting freshman orientation and now we’re getting ready to graduate and go off to college,” Meehan said. “So, it’s been crazy.”

Meehan is happy to be attending PC where he can stay close to his family.

“It’s going to be nice to be close enough to home where I can go back if anything is wrong or if I need anything or I can stay on campus,” Meehan explained. “I’m far enough away and it has enough of a campus feel where it can just become a new home for me.”

Meehan is going in to Providence undeclared, but says he will probably study economics.

Antone, Meehan’s track teammate, was honored next. Antone participated in track & field for all four years where he was a team captain plus 3-time 1st Team All State, 5-time 2nd Team All-State and 4-time All New England.

Coach Doyle praised Antone for his work ethic throughout his tenure.

“Without a doubt, the last four years, Harry Antone, I would consider the most valuable athlete in track & field that we could have on our team,” Doyle said. “He’s a guy that started out as a speedster 400 meter runner, that we pushed to be a 600 meter runner, that we pushed into being an 800 meter runner, who ended up coming out for our cross country team and doing what he could on that team to help us at any of the meets.”

“I was so impressed with him that I made him an indoor captain this year, which is a tremendous honor and a lot of responsibility,” Doyle continued. “But anytime you needed somebody, Harry was our go-to person.”

At St. Joseph’s, Antone will study Political Science and Philosophy.

“It went by so quick,” Antone said about his career at Hendricken. “I’m just grateful that my family is all here and it was really exciting. I’m really excited to go to Philadelphia and continue my track career next year.”

“It came down to Quinnipiac and St. Josephs and I just really liked the city campus,” Antone added. “Coach (Mike) Glavin welcomed me in with open arms so I’m pretty excited.”

When asked about what he has accomplished during his high school track & field career, Antone said he still had one more title to get before he graduates in a couple of months.

“Well, we’re still trying to get one more outdoor state championship, not over yet, but I accomplished a lot and I’m pretty happy with my performance,” Antone said.

Last but certainly not least came Rivet, the 2018 3x RI State Champ and Freshman State Placer. Rivet compiled a 193-23 career record at Hendricken and went 42-1 in his senior year.

Rivet also earned 3-time All-State All-Honors and was a NHSCA Senior All-American, placing 8th in the 2018 High School Nationals held in Virginia.

“The brighter the lights the more he shines,” Hendricken wrestling head coach Kevin Hennessey said. “He led by example through his actions on the mat. He doesn’t have much to say. He’s very quiet, but the example that he sat forward was on the mat. So, we’re very proud of Devin and he makes us look good.”

Rivet was upbeat after signing his NLI.

“It feels good,” Rivet said. “It wasn’t a long four years, but a somewhat long four years. I worked hard and I’m glad this moment finally came.”

And Rivet agreed with his coach that he liked to perform under the brightest of lights.

“Of course,” Rivet said. “I just wrestle, do my thing out there.”

While Rivet won three straight titles, it’s the one that he didn’t win that still sticks out in his mind.

“I accomplished a lot here, but there’s some things I wish I had accomplished,” Rivet said. “Like my freshman year, I should have won states, could have been a 4-timer instead of a 3-timer, but I was young, I learned from that and came back the next three years, winning it.”

Rivet is excited to bring his talent to the state of North Carolina, where he will study nursing.

“I visited there, it was a very nice campus,” Rivet explained. “I met the coaches there, they were nice. I’m just excited to wrestle in DI and go to Campbell University.”

Coach Hennessey is confident that Rivet will do well at the collegiate level.

“It’s good for Devin,” Hennessy added. “Congratulations to him. His hard work paid off. We’re all proud of him and we’re looking forward to seeing him succeed on the next level.”
