For the ninth year, New England Institute of Technology will serve as Rhode Island’s FIRST Tech Challenge Affiliate Partner. The challenge involving 33 Rhode Island middle and high school teams will take place this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the NEIT Center for Automotive Technology, 101 Access Rd., Warwick.
Founded in 1989 by accomplished inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was designed to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in students through the use of robotics.
FIRST creates accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. Students learn how to design, build and program an original robot for competition against other teams using a sports model. For more information, visit www.usfirst.org.
Volunteers from various industries throughout Rhode Island become partners in education by mentoring students to develop problem solving, critical thinking and innovative reasoning skills that are necessary to be successful in STEM careers.
