Once again the Cataract Fire Company No. 2 Scholarship Fund established in 1974 using proceeds from the sale of fire company property, now the Warwick Firefighters Club, after the city took over responsibility for firefighting has awarded scholarships to graduating students. Two Cataract members and former volunteers, Richard McGuinn and Mr. Otis Wyatt, were instrumental in establishing the scholarship fund and together served on the scholarship committee for years. McGuinn passed away in 2009 and Wyatt retired from the committee last year after the selection and moved permanently to Florida. Current committee members are Ronald Caniglia, Stephen Hay, Richard Delgado and Michael Shields. Mr. Dennis Mullen, Director of Secondary Education for Warwick Schools, also sits on the committee and acts as the tiebreaker should there be deadlocked. The Cataract Fire Company Scholarship exists to benefit Warwick residents who are graduating from their final year of secondary school, regardless of which high school they attend. The goal of the program is to benefit students who demonstrate a strong commitment to post-secondary education but may not have achieved the highest academic excellence in high school. Recipients are selected based on academic standing below the top 10 percent of the class who demonstrate a financial need and a strong desire to pursue a course of higher education. Preference is given to offspring of Warwick firefighters in cases where a number of applicants meet the criteria. An award ceremony was held May 15th at the Warwick School Administration Building. Hurst, Schof Vets and Michael Shields. The amount of the scholarships is dependent on endowment proceeds. This year’s scholarships were more than $1,400 each. (Submitted photo)
