A fifth person has been indicted in connection with the 2015 killing and dismemberment of a Cranston man.

Louis Geremia, 62, of 36 Stone Hill Ave. in Warwick, is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and mutilation of a body, the office of Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced July 21. He was arrested at his residence without incident the previous day.

Geremia was arraigned in Superior Court and ordered held without bail pending an Aug. 4 hearing.

The charges relate to the death of 36-year-old Kerry Mello, who was reported missing to Cranston police shortly after he was last seen on Aug. 10, 2015. Later that month, a torso was found in waters near Westport, Mass., and two severed legs were discovered on a Little Compton beach near the Massachusetts line. The remains were later identified as Mello’s.

The statewide grand jury in April of this year indicted four men – Jamie Barriera, 35, and Francisco Concepcion, 36, of Louisiana Avenue in Warwick; Albert Barriera, 61, of Shannon Drive in Warwick; and Graig Bustillo, 39, of Adelaide Avenue in Providence – on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and mutilation of a body for their alleged roles in Mello’s death.

In May, Bustillo pleaded guilty to the murder charge in Superior Court. He and the other three original suspects remain held without bail.

According to authorities, Mello was killed following a dispute over money and marijuana.

The investigation is said to have found a large quantity of cash and marijuana was stolen from Jamie Barriera – who was involved in a growing operation as a licensed caregiver – in the summer of 2015. Authorities say Barriera believed Mello, described as an associate of his, was responsible.

Authorities allege Jamie Barriera lured Mello to the home of his father, Albert Barriera, and that Mello was killed and dismembered at that location. Mello’s remains were then disposed of at sea using Albert Berriera’s boat, authorities say.

The investigation remains ongoing, Kilmartin’s office indicated. Rhode Island and Massachusetts state police, along with police in Cranston and Warwick, are assisting with the probe.
