8 mentor programs earn premier member distinction

The RI Mentoring Partnership (RIMP) has named eight of its current program partners as Premier Members. The designation is the highest awarded through RIMP’s second successful year with its Quality Standards Membership program.

The Quality Standards Membership program helps make it easier for prospective mentors and other members of the public to find a mentoring program that is meeting or exceeding expectations. Those expectations are based on the nationally accepted “Elements of Effective Practice in Mentoring,” which are benchmarks over a wide area of issues concerning a mentoring program. They range from the strength of the program’s method for screening volunteers to its ability to support and retain mentors once they are matched with a child. Just 16 of the 62 programs in the Partnership have attained premier status.

“So many children in our community can benefit from having a mentor,” says Jo-Ann Schofield, president and COO of the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership. “By implementing Quality Standards Membership, RIMP now has the ability to identify which programs will provide a top notch mentoring experience for both the mentors and the children they serve.”

The eight programs named Premier Members are: RIC/Henry Barnard School, Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket, Blackstone Valley Community Action Program, Parent Support Network, Riverzedge, Project Gemini/Cranston School Department, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State and the Cumberland/Lincoln Boys & Girls Club.

Started in 1990, the non-profit Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership serves as an umbrella organization for mentoring programs statewide. The partnership provides extensive training for mentors and mentor program coordinators, offering collaboration among mentoring agencies, providing volunteer referral services, marketing campaigns and now the Quality Standards Membership program.
