In 2014, Smithfield ended the Hendricken swimming team’s streak of 24 straight state titles.
But in 2015, the Hawks bounced back in a big way, cruising by their competition with a convincing win at Brown University on Feb. 21.
The Hawks totaled 383 points in the win, with Barrington coming in a distant second with 218 points, as Hendricken regained its crown.
Standout sophomore Max Miranda won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while also helping Hendricken’s 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays to state titles, as well.
But Hendricken had more than just Miranda – it had tremendous depth.
“That’s why they call it a team,” Hendricken head coach Dave Hanson said. “Max Miranda was unbelievable, Marc Andrews swam phenomenal and pulled it out in the 200 free relay, Brendan Crowe and Dillane Wehbe, a freshman, swam great. Our three seniors too – Evan Kortick, Gian Paterno and Anthony Vessella – they were all great.”
The Hawks may be in good shape to start another streak, too, as they returned most of their key swimmers from the 2015 team this season.
