Colonel James M. Manni, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, announces that during the five-day period from July 3 through July 7, nine individuals were arrested and charged with driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

“There is simply no excuse for anyone driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol,” Colonel Manni said. “The Rhode Island State Police will continue to aggressively pursue, arrest and prosecute anyone who drives while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, putting the lives of everyone else at risk.”

Additionally, during the same time period, the State Police responded to (953) calls for service, conducted (486) motor vehicle stops, assisted (82) disabled motor vehicles and investigated (61) motor vehicle crashes. Troopers also issued (507) citations, including (135) for speeding, (57) for seatbelt and child restraint violations and (19) for distracted driving.

The arrests resulted from an intensive enforcement initiative as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Operation CARE” (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) national enforcement campaigns. The increased patrols focused on detecting and arresting motorists found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and strict enforcement of other motor vehicle violations, including speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.
