To the Editor:
I was pleased to participate in the ribbon cutting for Rhode Island Housing’s new Help Center located in Warwick on Monday, July 25. As a member of the board of commissioners of Rhode Island Housing, I am proud of the work this agency does to ensure that all people who live and work in our great state can access safe, affordable housing that meets their needs.
The Help Center is part of the $36.6 million in new federal Hardest Hit foreclosure prevention funding awarded to the state this year. According to RI Housing Executive Director Barbara Fields, since the Hardest Hit fund launched in 2010, the money has been used to help more than 3,000 Rhode Islanders stay in their homes.
One of the biggest reasons I am running for City Council is to ensure we have safe, clean neighborhoods. Since the housing crisis, a number of Warwick communities have seen an increase in foreclosures, leaving homes empty and unkempt. Once beautiful homes become eyesores and targets for vandalism and break-ins, driving law-abiding taxpayers and students out of the city.
The recently opened Help Center will serve as an excellent resource for our community. It will help reduce foreclosures, which in turn, will help our beautiful city remain safe while maintaining its charm. Homeowners who are struggling to make their housing payments because of a loss of employment or other financial issues can get information at the Help Center located at 43 Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick or at HHFRI.org.
Steve McAllister
Democrat Candidate for Warwick City Council Ward 7
