A glowing end to The Longest Day

Lanterns released from the Aspray Boathouse in Pawtuxet Sunday at dusk brought to a close the Longest Day celebrated by the Alzheimer’s Association as a means of bringing awareness of the disease and honoring caregivers working with victims of Alzheimer’s. The Rhode Island day started at 7 a.m. with 13 teams across the state devoting 16 hours to an activity of their choice from playing bridge to quilting and reading, said Donna McGowan, executive director of the Rhode Island Chapter. There was some question that the hot air wish lanterns would lift off in such muggy conditions, prompting McGowan to observe, “We’re working with Mother Nature.” But the lanterns did fly, with many of the 150 sold taking to the sky. Pawtuxet Village merchants that supported The Longest Day included Betty’s Candies, Cork & Brew Wine Tasting, Imperial Room at Rhodes Place, Powers Pub, Fellini Pizzeria and Revolution Restaurant & Bar.
