A role model for many

To the Editor:

In Warwick, we are fortunate to have many devoted teachers and administrators whose dedication to our students is matched only by their continued enthusiasm for their profession. Chief among them is Nancy Plumb, Norwood Elementary School’s beloved and longtime principal, who retired at the end of the school year.

The celebration at the school – a full house that included students, faculty, parents, and Nancy’s family – featured special performances by each grade, comments from parents and faculty, and the presentation of an Adirondack chair that was painted by every pupil. It was a fitting tribute to a woman who has dedicated a quarter-century to Warwick’s schoolchildren.

I have been blessed to call Nancy and her husband, Bill, my friends. Their abiding faith, love of family, and steadfast devotion to their wide circle of friends have been an inspiration and a comfort to me for many years.

Nancy brought those same core values to the former Potowomut Elementary School, where she began as a half-day kindergarten teacher, and to Lippitt Elementary School, where she taught for 14 years before accepting the principal’s post at Norwood a decade ago. Besides her obvious passion for teaching and love of children, her belief that Norwood was in and of itself a community helped to foster strong relationships with parents and guardians as well as local groups and non-profit organizations that encompassed the Norwood neighborhood.

The Norwood School family is one that looks out for each other, supports those in crisis, and works cooperatively to ensure that children are receiving not only a good education, but the tools and guidance they need to lead productive and successful lives. This is due in no small measure to the respect Nancy has always shown to her faculty and staff and her ability to make sure everyone is invested in the school’s –  and its students’ – success.

Every student should be fortunate enough to have a teacher or a principal like Nancy. I have no doubt that anyone who has met her remembers her compassion, humor, and support. She is a role model we can all aspire to be like. Our community and our school district are certainly richer for having had Nancy in it, and I join so many in our city in thanking her for her dedication and commitment over the years and wishing her the happy and healthy retirement she so richly deserves.
