AG shred-a-thon conducted with greatest protections

To the Editor:

In response to a recent letter to the editor (What guarantee that it was shredded? Warwick Beacon, May 10, 2016), I wanted to provide assurance to consumers and provide an explanation of the process we employ as part of the shred-a-thons the Office of Attorney General hosted across Rhode Island the week of May 2, including the shred-a-thon held at the Pilgrim Senior Center.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin started hosting the free shred-a-thon events in 2011 in an effort to help consumers protect against identity theft. Each year, our office has partnered with Doc Shredding Corporation. It is through the generosity of this company that we are able to host these events at no cost to the office or the consumer. The shred-a-thons have proven to be very popular, and each year we have increased the number of locations across the state.

A few years ago we switched from using an onsite shredding truck to a box truck that takes the documents back to Doc Shredding’s warehouse to shred for several reasons, specifically because the box truck is more environmentally friendly than the onsite shredding truck, and it gives us greater capacity in terms of the amount of material that can be collected from consumers.

I can assure you that the method we use is very safe. Materials are transported back to Doc Shredding’s secure facility, where they are shredded to a fine confetti and baled on a large plant-based shredder. This offers the same level of security and confidentiality as onsite mobile shredding. The shredded documents are then recycled, thereby keeping tons of material out of Rhode Island landfills.

Doc Shredding Corp is a National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) Certified shredding company. They operate a high capacity NAID “AAA” Certified shredding facility, equipped with full access control and alarm system. Doc Shredding Corp is committed to the safety and security of all sensitive information paper and electronic. Strict NAID “AAA” Certified procedural and processing guidelines ensures NO UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS to classified information prior to destruction.

The integrity of the shred-a-thons is very important to the Office of Attorney General, as is the protection of each consumer’s personal identity. It is our hope that every consumer who participates in one of our shred-a-thons goes away feeling confident in the process.

Plus, it is much easier to rifle through your papers without having to paste them together first.
