(Marvel Comics strike again)

Paul Rudd plays the ordinary man forced into extraordinary situations in this adaptation of yet another Marvel comic book character.

Rudd plays Scott Lang, a non-violent cat burglar who is released from prison and immediately recruited by aging scientist and former Ant-Man Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to fill his suit and stop the evil scientists from using its powers for no good. Pym’s daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) trains him and goes along for the bumpy ride as Scott shrinks himself to fight the bad guys.

The effects are great, especially when Ant Man joins his ant allies. It is an adventure to watch him slip down a bathroom drain, run on the barrel of a gun and a dozen other feats. He has some help from his three misfit friends in the final adventure, which is filled with narrow escapes.

“Ant-Man” has a big back story involving his estranged wife and daughter and her policeman husband, making it more palatable for those looking for more than violent chases. It’s a perfect movie for a rainy afternoon, one that the entire family can enjoy.

Stick around for a short post-script during the credits. Once again, we got a surprise look at what is coming next.

Rated PG-13, with some violence but nothing like most movies of this genre.
