Acciari, Buco take the ice for Frozen Fenway

Posted

A pair of former Hendricken players got the chance to lace up their skates and play inside iconic Fenway Park during the recent Frozen Fenway series of hockey games, accumulating a lifetime of memories in the process.

First to take the stage was Noel Acciari, who suited up for Providence against Merrimack on Jan. 4.

The Friars battled to a 1-1 tie, with the ex-Hawk registering a pair of shots that were turned away by Warrior net-minder Rasmus Tirronen.

Despite not making his way onto the scoresheet at Fenway, Acciari has been proficient in front of goal so far in 2013-14; his seven markers places him in a three-way tie for second on the team.

In addition, three of those tallies have come while PC was playing short-handed, including the only goal of the contest in the Friars’ first clash with Merrimack back on Nov. 8.

Following in Acciari’s skate tracks was Stephen Buco, now currently a member of the squad at UMass-Lowell.

The River Hawks took to the ice last Saturday afternoon against Northeastern, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Huskies in inclement conditions despite out-shooting their opponents 48-31.

One bright spot for UMass-Lowell on the day was their performance in the face-off circle, winning 49 out of 74 draws, with Buco going 10 of 14 from the dot.

On the season, the junior forward has notched three goals, including game-winners in consecutive contests against Penn State and Notre Dame in November, while setting up four more for the River Hawks.

Acciari and Buco will have an opportunity to lock horns in the not-too-distant future, with Providence and UMass-Lowell – both nationally-ranked inside the top ten – slated to play a home-and-home series on Jan. 24 and 25, with the seventh-ranked Friars entertaining the No. 10 River Hawks in the first game of the twin-bill before the scene shifts to the Mill City the following evening.

Dujon earns Rookie of the Week honors

Former Toll Gate standout Ethan Dujon transferred to Mount Idea College from Dean College earlier this year, and the freshman guard is already making his presence felt.

For his play last week, Dujon earned Greater Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors.

The Warwick native broke into the Mustang starting lineup in his first week with the team. He led the team with 14 points in a GNAC game against Rivier, then had 10 points and a huge block in a home conference win over Emmanuel, before pouring in 17 points and collecting three assists as the Mustangs fell 83-81 in double overtime at Lasell. Dujon averaged nearly 14 points over three games, along with almost five rebounds and a steal, block and assist per game.
