Acciari is leading the way for the Friars

Hendricken product Noel Acciari is leading by example this winter while wearing the captain’s “C” on his chest for the Providence College hockey team, helping the Friars to a 13-6-1 overall record thus far.

The former Hawk has notched five goals and seven assists on the season, with all but one point coming since the start of December for the junior forward.

Acciari scored a pair of influential goals in the third period of PC’s 5-4 overtime victory against Colorado College on January 3, the first coming only 42 seconds into the stanza and re-establishing parity between the Friars and Tigers at two goals apiece.

His second marker of the contest came with 6:24 left, tying the game at 3-3 before Brandon Tanev broke the deadlock in Providence’s favor 15 seconds later, only for Colorado College’s Ian Young to cancel out Tanev with 2:42 to go.

Acciari’s key contribution helped the Friars extend their winning streak at the time to four in a row, a run that was eventually halted at six by cross-town rival Brown on Saturday in a 5-3 setback.

Despite the defeat to the Bears, Providence stayed at number 14 in the latest USCHO.com poll released on Monday, making PC one of six Hockey East programs ranked inside the top 20.

Pilgrim graduate Taylor Ryan came home first in the 50 and 100-yard butterfly in Rhode Island College’s swim meet against Plymouth State last Saturday, with the Anchorwomen falling to the Panthers 115-82.

Ex-Hawk Ryan Palumbo scored eight points and had four assists as Roger Williams overturned a 26-20 halftime deficit to knock off Wentworth 52-47 on Saturday.
