Alice R. Hurl

Alice R. Hurl, 86, of Cranston, died on May 20, 2013, at the Philip Hulitar Center in Providence.

Born in Milford, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Joseph B. Hurl, Alice M. Killeen Hurl, and Elizabeth Ballard Hurl. Miss Hurl earned a Bachelor of English Education and an MAT in English, from RICE. Miss Hurl began her career as an educator in the Warwick Public Schools in 1948, and was Department Head of English at Pilgrim High School from 1964 until her retirement in 1986. After her retirement from the Warwick School Department, Alice taught at the Seminary of Our Lady of Providence. She also enjoyed her volunteer work as an editor at the Providence Visitor newspaper.

Alice was the sister of the late Elinore Watts and Joanne H. Durigan. She is survived by seven nieces and nephews, Kathleen Fairfield, R. Christopher Durigan, Kevin Durigan, Maureen Durigan, Timothy Durigan, Sean Durigan, all of Cranston, and James A. Watts, of Harrisburg, Virginia. She is also survived by 13 grandnieces and grandnephews. Aunt Alice was a wonderful presence in our lives, so vibrant, generous and thoughtful, and we were blessed that she was a part of our family.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 28, at 9 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church, 350 Fair Street, Warwick. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
