All taxpayers getting bills even if bank pays from escrow account

Warwick property owners began receiving their 2015 real estate tax bills this week, prompting a flurry of calls to City Hall.

In an effort to ensure that all taxpayers are aware of state aid and available tax exemptions, this year, real estate tax bills were sent to all property owners, even those who in prior years did not receive a bill because their taxes may have been paid by their mortgage company through escrow. Residents are encouraged to read the list on the back of the bill, and may inquire with the Tax Assessor’s Office to determine their eligibility for these exemptions.  The Tax Assessor’s Office can be reached at 738-2000, ext. 6016.

A release issued by the city said “to protect taxpayers’ interests, residents whose property taxes are paid by their mortgage company were also asked to forward the bill along to their mortgage company. This notice was sent out of an abundance of caution and was not meant to suggest that mortgage companies would no longer be making these payments on taxpayers’ behalf, but was included because every mortgage company functions differently. Some may need a copy of the bill; others may not. Therefore, residents may opt to simply contact the company first to see if it is necessary to forward the bill to them.”

Due to the number of tax bills that are sent on an annual basis, about 40,000 residential property bills, a high volume of calls to the Tax Assessor’s Office is to be expected during the next several business days.

“Residents’ patience is greatly appreciated,” the release reads.
