American paranoia film series debuts Oct. 6 at library

Politics and fear go hand-in-hand in the U.S., and the 2016 election is making the country exceptionally uneasy and unnerved. With that as a backdrop, the Warwick Public Library is offering American Paranoia: A Film Series on Thursdays starting Oct. 6 through Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.

Steve Starger and Wil Gregersen will serve as co-hosts for the four films with uniquely American fears.

On October 6, cower at Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), starring Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter. The citizens of Santa Mira, California are being transformed into emotionless pod people when they fall asleep. Can the alien invasion be stopped?

On October 13, panic at The Manchurian Candidate (1962), starring Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury. Brainwashing has turned a Korean War veteran into a secret assassin for the Russians and Chinese. Will he succeed in killing a presidential candidate?

On October 20, recoil at Deliverance (1972), starring Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight. Four city-dwellers on a journey down a rural Georgia river are attacked by local men. Can they escape the wilderness before its sinister inhabitants catch and kill them?

On October 27, tremble at The Parallax View (1974) starring Warren Beatty and Hume Cronyn. A journalist investigating the assassination of a U.S. senator follows a trail of dead witnesses to the Parallax Corporation. Can he survive learning what Parallax really is?
