Amica $75,000 Community Challenge once again surpasses goal

Posted

The Amica $75,000 Community Challenge, a month-long charity event partnering Amica Insurance with United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI), Crossroads Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, ended on March 3. It raised more than $196,000, once again surpassing the initial goal of $150,000.

The Challenge encouraged people and businesses in the community to make donations to the three charitable organizations from Feb. 4 through March 3. Amica guaranteed to match those donations, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000 per charity. The charities were chosen with three basic human needs in mind: heat and utilities (UWRI), food (Rhode Island Community Food Bank) and housing (Crossroads Rhode Island).

“On behalf of Amica Insurance, I would like to thank everyone who donated to the Challenge during this difficult winter,” said Bob DiMuccio, president, chairman and CEO of Amica.

Locally, an example of the impact made possible by Amica’s generosity and support from the community was felt when Comprehensive Community Action received funding from UWRI to help a family avert crisis.

Recently widowed, Mr. Walters (note: name changed to protect client privacy) is a single father and Vietnam veteran who in addition to dealing with the loss of his wife and ongoing treatment of PTSD fell upon difficult financial times. With a modest income that stretches just enough to cover his mortgage and basic necessities for his family, Mr. Walters fell behind on his electric bill after his limited resources were used to replace the hot water heater in his home. Facing termination of his electric service, which is also used for heat, Mr. Walters received help from Comprehensive Community Action to stabilize his household thanks to funding from UWRI, received through the Amica Community Challenge.

“The lingering effects of a sluggish economy and this past winter’s bitter cold created the perfect storm for thousands of local families, like Mr. Walters’, struggling to make ends meet,” said Anthony Maione, president and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island. “With rising utility and heating costs coupled with cuts to assistance programs, Amica’s generosity and the outpouring of support from the community is providing much-needed help for people in need.”
