Animal sanctuary’s food bank helps pets in need

In the midst of the holiday season, numerous charitable efforts aimed at aiding those in need kick into high gear.

For Dan MacKenzie of Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate, this time of year serves to highlight an ongoing effort aimed at helping the four-legged friends that are hugely important in the lives of many.

MacKenzie has given away dog and cat food to struggling pet owners for 15 years, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times – everyone from “people that have lost their jobs and need a helping hand” to seniors and veterans for whom a pet’s value cannot be understated.

“A lot of the time, that’s the only thing they’ve got left in their lives,” he said. “There’s so many people that need help right now.”

Aside from sponsors such as the Blue Buffalo dog and cat food company, MacKenzie accepts donations of monetary assistance and pet food from all corners of the community.

“I don’t refuse anything,” he said, while noting that money is helpful as he carries out the farm’s mission of caring for abused and neglected animals.

The pet food bank program, which runs year-round, draws people from across the region.

“We get people from Connecticut, we get people from Massachusetts, we get people from all over,” MacKenzie said. “The majority of people really appreciate it, they need it.”

Those wishing to donate or in need of pet food can contact MacKenzie at 574-6056. The mailing address for the farm is 1097 Chopmist Hill Road, North Scituate, RI 02857, while the physical address is 1056 Danielson Pike in North Scituate.

MacKenzie asked that visitors call before making the trip. More information can be found online at www.bonniedalefarmanimalsanctuary.com.
