Anoushka Shankar, one of the leading figures in world music, to bring her renowned sitar playing to Rhode Island

From the age of nine when Anoushka Shankar began studying the sitar exclusively with her legendary father, Ravi Shankar, her career was destined to become international. She made her performance debut in New Delhi at the age of 13 and was playing venues such as Carnegie Hall by the age of 15 while accompanying her father at his concerts across the globe. On Friday, Nov. 22, this world-renowned sitarist and composer will bring her talents to the historic Park Theatre in Cranston.

As one of the leading figures in world music, Shankar is deeply rooted in Indian classical music. Thriving as a composer, she has been exploring fertile ground in the crossover between Indian music and a variety of genres that include flamenco, electronica, jazz and Western classical music.

Born in London into a Bengali-Tamil Hindu family, Anoushka’s childhood was divided between London and New Delhi before moving to California as a teenager to attend San Dieguito Academy. She released her first album, “Anoushka,” in 1998 at the age of 17, the first of multiple collaborations with her father.

In 2003 Anoushka and her paternal half-sister, American singer Norah Jones, were both nominated for Grammy Awards when Shankar became the youngest-ever and first woman nominee in the World Music category for her album, “Live at Carnegie Hall.” Three years later, she was the first Indian musician to perform at the Grammys when nominated in the Best Contemporary World Music category for “RISE.”

This past October, Shankar followed-up her 2011 Grammy-nominated album, “Traveller,” with the highly-anticipated release of “Traces of You,” inspired by the idea that everything leaves a subtle trace on everything it comes in contact with. Featuring appearances by Norah Jones and world-renowned percussionists Tanmoy Bose and Pirashanna Thevarajah, Anoushka debuts a breathtaking new musical union, pairing the sitar with the intricate sounds of a relatively new instrument, the Hang Drum, played by its foremost exponent, Manu Delago. Generating rave reviews, the album represents some of the deepest and most personal music Anoushka has written.

Anoushka Shankar will take the stage of the Park Theatre at 8 p.m. on Nov. 22. Tickets are $35 and $45 and available by calling the Box Office at 467-7275 or online at www.ParkTheatreRI.com. The Park Theatre is located at 848 Park Ave., Cranston. Free parking is available for all shows.
