Apponaug 10’s fall in state title game but still bound for regional

The Apponaug Babe Ruth 10-year-old all-stars fell just short of a state title but their summer will continue. Apponaug lost two games to Cranston’s CLCF in the title round of the Cal Ripken state tournament, but since CLCF is hosting the New England Regional, it already received an automatic bid. The Rhode Island bid goes to the runner-up finisher, meaning Apponaug is still alive.

Before the state title round, Apponaug was unbeaten in the tournament, but CLCF came out of the loser’s bracket with a vengeance, winning 13-2 last Tuesday to force a winner-take-all championship game. That game turned into a classic, with CLCF winning the pitcher’s duel 3-1 thanks to a three-run double in the fifth inning.

Apponaug begins play in the regional – which will be held at Ricci Field – on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., against the champion from Maine.
