Apponaug 16U squad wins ASA states

Winslow Park hosted the Amateur Softball Association of America 16U state tournament over the weekend, and the Apponaug Pride 16U Gold team made itself right at home. The Warwick-based squad captured the state title with a run through the 13-team bracket. Apponaug won its opener 10-2 over the Comets, then beat the EB Bulldogs 6-0. Victories over Storm and Fusion put the team one win away from the state championship. The Fusion came out of the loser’s bracket and beat Apponaug to force a winner-take-all game on Sunday, but Apponaug won it 6-1 to capture the title.

Apponaug’s Pride Black team also competed in the 16U tournament and went 3-2. Tournaments in other age groups were held around the state, with Apponaug entering one 10U team, one 12U team, two 14U teams and four 18U teams. The 18U tournament is still ongoing.

Winslow Park will be hopping again beginning July 11, when Apponaug hosts the annual Richard Durning Tournament.
