Apponaug Pride Gold 16U won the Rhode Island ASA state championship with a victory over the North East Nightmare late last month.

The Nightmare came out strong, scoring two runs in the first inning, but Apponaug surged from there, getting a lot of offense and strong pitching from Cora Geunes and Jen Paride. Brooke Casacalenda drove in the first run of the game for Apponaug and that was just the beginning. Dana Barclay, Brenna DuPerry and Jamie Hopgood had big hits, while Alyssa Derrick and Jen Paride nearly put the ball out of the park. Cailtin O’Hanley and Jessica Howkins added RBI singles and Christine McNeil, Ashley Silvia and Gabby Caldwell also chipped in. Geunes added a double and a single to her pitching performance.

The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule, and Apponaug celebrated the championship.
