With the snow finally melted from the fields, Apponaug Girls Softball held its Spring Recreation League Opening Day on Saturday at Winslow Park.

It was a beautiful day with many players, families and friends in attendance.

The Warwick Fire Department Honor Guard led the 22 teams onto the field, followed by the “Star Spangled Banner,” played by students from the Gorton Junior High School band.

Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, City Council President Donna T. Travis (Ward 6), City Council Member Camille Vella- Wilkinson (Ward 3) and Bev Wiley, ASA R.I. State Commissioner, were all in attendance at the ceremony.

They spoke about the journey to make the league’s new softball complex a reality, the dedication of the parents and the volunteers who make Apponaug a successful organization, the great sense of community that Apponaug shares with the city and the importance of sportsmanship.

The league is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.

AGS is proud to offer three seasons: spring recreation/travel, summer travel programs and fall ball recreation/travel, as well as showcase teams, all developed to help young women enjoy the sport of softball and learn valuable sportsmanship and leadership skills.
