Backed by an explosive offense and stellar defense, Jillian Walsh tossed a no-hitter against the Nipmuc Warriors in single-elimination play of the Wave Summer Slam tournament on Sunday.

Kiley Ferns put Apponaug on the board with a two-run single in the top of first inning, scoring Paxton Miga and Jillian Walsh. Apponaug brushed aside Nipmuc’s best challenge in the bottom of the first. Walsh walked the leadoff batter but Janessa and Deidra Clements made solid defensive plays to get two quick outs. Walsh then walked the fourth batter. With runners on first and third and two outs, Nipmuc attempted to score on a passed ball, but Kate Ferns, the catcher, quickly pounced on the errant ball and flipped to Walsh at the plate, who tagged the runner and ended Nipmuc’s threat.

Paxton Miga scored another run in the second inning on a single by Grace Mercurio. Walsh retired the side in the bottom of the second with a ground out and two strikeouts.

Fifteen Apponaug players batted in the third inning, scoring nine runs capped by a 3-run triple by Kiana Fanning. In the bottom of the frame, Walsh retired the side on three ground outs back to the circle.

Apponaug’s bats stayed hot in the last inning when they scored five additional runs on RBI base hits from Zoe Coleman, Tara O’Connor, Janessa Clements, and Fanning. Nipmuc could not find a way on base in the last inning. Its batters were retired with a ground out to the pitcher, a pop up to first and a flare to center field.

After the game, Walsh said “That was fun. We played so well. It was nice for us to get a no-hitter. The defense played great, we had no errors. We would have had a perfect game if I didn’t walk two girls.”

Nipmuc and Apponaug are both first-year 14u teams. Nipmuc was 30-10-2 last season, while this is Apponaug’s first season together as a team. Apponaug also beat Nipmuc Saturday 9-4 with Walsh in the circle.
