This past weekend, Apponaug Girls Softball (AGS) hosted its annual Fall Charity Classic. Fifty teams from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire participated in the tournament. Games were played at Winslow Park and Kenny Field, both in Warwick, and Brayton Park in Cranston. All teams participated in pool play games on Saturday then played single elimination games on Sunday.
Apponaug Pride Gold 18U, coached by Julie Hopgood, won its division, winning games against Panther Gold, Eclipse Blue and Drama Gold, with their final game culminating in the championship win, with a score of 12-5 against Cumberland Chaos.
Apponaug Pride 10U, coached by Rich Halstead, was the runner-up in its division, first winning against the Rebels, with a score of 9-7. The team then competed against the Ravens, coming up short 10-4.
This tournament was made possible with the help of the Amateur Softball Association umpires and AGS junior umpires, who waived their fees, along with the grounds crew and the support from teams, coaches, families and volunteers. Elmwood Sports generously donated all the T-shirts for the winning teams and the runner's up. AGS has raised over $45,000 to benefit Apponaug families and Warwick based charities.
AGS, founded in 1981, is a fast-pitch league, offering teams from 8U through 18U, with three seasons of play – spring recreation, summer travel and fall ball.
