Appropriate use of RI taxpayer dollars?

Posted

To the Editor:

With a deficit of several million dollars looming on the horizon, the R.I. General Assembly will be put to the task to find a way to bring state revenues and expenditures into equilibrium. Every existing public service needs to be carefully scrutinized to determine its efficacy right down to the core issue, its raison d’etre.

Much has been written in this newspaper about the cost to continue the operation of HealthSource RI, which the state bureaucracy created to implement the provisions of Obamacare in Rhode Island. All parties – critics and supporters alike – agree the cost in fiscal year 2016 and following years is significant. The alternative is to shift the burden to the federal government.

Now, with the intensity of attention forming on the issue of whether R.I. taxpayers should subsidize HealthSource RI any further, this bureaucracy is using public funds to justify its continued existence. See the Sunday Projo, Dec. 14, 2014, page A3.

Is this an appropriate use of R.I. taxpayer dollars?
