Austin A. “Skit” Johnston, age 88, of Warwick, died on December 16, 2013 at Kent County Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Anna L. (Souto) Johnston.

Born in Warwick, a son of the late Robert and Catherine (Brady) Johnston, he lived in Warwick for most of his life. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Johnston was a Deputy Sheriff for Kent County for 30 years, retiring in 1997. He was previously employed at Grinnell Corporation in Cranston.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Dianne L. Johnston of Warwick, a son, Gerald D. Johnston of Connecticut; a grandson, Damion Sanberg; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Robert, James, Howard, Norman, Charles, Thomas, William, Anthony, Richard, Gerald, and Joseph Johnston.

His funeral will be held on Friday, December 20, at 9 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Rita Church, 722 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick. Visiting hours are Thursday 4-7 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans’ Cemetery, Exeter.
