Avedisian presented Anchor of Hope for vision of better day

Posted

Mayor Scott Avedisian was awarded the 2013 Anchor of Hope Award Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island.

The Anchor of Hope award is a personal award given by Bishop Nicholas Knisely to mark a special ministry to the common life of the 51 churches that make up the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island. He is particularly seeking to honor people who inspire others in the state to believe that tomorrow is going to be a better day than today.

Bishop Knisely honored Avedisian not only because of his gratefulness for the advice and counsel given during Knisely’s transition period to being the Bishop of Rhode Island, but also in recognition of Avedisian’s ability to merge his Christian faith and his vocation as a community leader.

In a release, the bishop said Mayor Avedisian serves the people of his city and the whole of the diocese in a moral, ethical and responsible way. His service is a model to all, a picture of what the vocation of laity can look like in practice.

Avedisian is a lifelong member of Trinity Church in Pawtuxet Village. He is the fourth generation of his family to worship there. He has been president of the Standing Committee for the last three years, and helped oversee the election of Bishop Knisely and the transition from Bishop Wolf. He has been a member of Diocesan Council, honorary chairman and vice president of Episcopal Charities, a member of the ECC Board, and a member of the Program & Budget Committee. Avedisian, 48, served for more than 20 years as a board member of St. Mary’s Home for Children, and has served on the board of St. Elizabeth’s Home.

Anchor of Hope Awardees receive a wearable seal of the Bishop; a lapel pin or pendant made from an imprint of the Diocesan seal on the Bishop’s ring and cast in silver by Sue Gray Jewelry in Newport.

Congrats Scott glad the new Bishop recognizes the gift you are to Trinity and the Diocese as well as the City of Warwick. Your open door policy both at Trinity and Warwick have always made you available to those who want to talk.. I know you made time for Axel when he made Eagle Scout and are always there to support your fellow church members' and citizens.

Hope to see you next time we are in RI

    God Bless,

    Barbara & Danny
