Avis Ella Cormier

Avis Ella (Rathbun) Cormier, 91, of Fairfax Drive, Warwick, died at home February 7, 2012. She was the wife of the late Emory J. Cormier. Mr. and Mrs. Cormier were married for 57 years.

Born in Sterling, Conn., a daughter of the late Raymond and Alice (Saunders) Rathbun, she lived in Warwick since 1963. She was a graduate of Rhode Island College and held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in teaching. Mrs. Cormier taught for 31 years in elementary education in the Scituate and Cranston School Departments, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #43 in Warwick and the Rhode Island College Alumni Association. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers organization.

She is survived by a son, Raymond R. Cormier of Warwick, and a granddaughter, Brenda Cormier. She was the sister of the late Ruth Grantmeyer and Mattie Renehan.

Her funeral was held Feb. 10 from Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St Timothy Church, 1799 Warwick Ave., Warwick. Burial was in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick.
