Grammy Award winner and Billboard Top 10 singer Steve Tyrell will be the headline performer at the Providence Rotary Club’s 2nd Annual Jazz Fest, Sunday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at the Rhode Island Center for the Performing Arts (Park Theatre) in Cranston.

Direct from a two-week engagement at Manhattan’s legendary Café Carlyle, Tyrell will bring his seven-piece band and their crowd-pleasing interpretations of pop standards to Rhode Island for one performance only.

Perhaps best known for “The Way You Look Tonight,” his romance-launching hits include “The Simple Life,” “Crush On You” and “The Sunny Side of The Street.” Steve has sold hundreds of thousands of albums and gained a passionate following all over the world.

The Providence Rotary Jazz Fest benefits the Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, which supports local and international charities involving disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, and economic and community development.

“Bringing an artist of this caliber to Rhode Island is a real coup for Providence Rotary, for the beneficiaries of our charitable work and for music lovers all over southern New England,” said club president Barbara Harris. “We’re hoping for a full house at the newly renovated Performing Arts Center on Park Avenue, which has great acoustics and excellent views from every seat.”

With sold-out shows across America and raves from around the world, his following increases day by day. Although Steve tours mainly with his band, he also enjoys playing with some of the most renowned orchestras in the land, and has had multiple performance with The Boston Pops, The New York Pops, The Nashville Symphony, Kansas City Symphony and The Houston Symphony.

At the request of the Sinatra family and Quincy Jones, Steve was the featured performer with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at their season-opening concert in which Frank Sinatra was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Also at the request of the Sinatra family, he reprised that performance at Carnegie Hall. This is one of the rare times the family has reached into the vault of original Sinatra arrangements to share them with another artist.

In 2005, after the passing of the legendary Bobby Short, Steve was asked by New York City’s Café Carlyle to take over their revered Holiday Season of November and December, which Mr. Short had not missed for 36 years. In 2013 Tyrell’s contract was extended through his 11th season, starting a new Carlyle legacy that now also includes performances in May.

The event opens with Boss Saxes, featuring Dan Moretti and Greg Abate, with Gary Johnson on drums, Tim Ray on Piano and Dave Zinno on bass.
