The Providence Performing Arts Center has booked the exciting Midtown Men for one show on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m.

“Who are the Midtown Men?” you ask.

J. Robert Spencer, Christian Huff, Michael Longoria and Daniel Keichard are the four original “Jersey Boys,” having spent three and a half years together, performing the musical on Broadway. They will bring some of the great Four Seasons songs, plus songs of The Beatles, the Beach Boys and Motown stars to the PPAC stage.

I spoke with Spencer from his home in New York City, where the group had two weeks off before opening their 2014 tour in Rhode Island, a tour that will take them to cities across the United States and Canada.

“We are the first touring act to ever come out of a Broadway musical,” Spencer said. “We developed a friendship that has continued since ‘Jersey Boys.’ We are now in our fourth year as the Midtown Men, playing 80 to 100 shows a year. In 2014 we have 120 booked.”

“I can’t wait to play Providence,” he said. “I hear the [Providence Performing] Arts Center is one of the great old houses. We love to play in those venues.

“We’ve played before crowds ranging from a private party on Cape Cod for 12 people to 20,000 people at a state fair, to 25,000 at the White House tree lighting ceremony, to 100 million at Dick Clark’s Times Square New Year’s Eve television spectacular.

“Midtown Men has been a true creative journey. Our job is to entertain, and the response has been terrific. We must be doing something right. We all just love what we do. We sing, tell a few stories, and after the show meet and greet the audience in the lobby. How could we go wrong?”

Spencer said that the show has been attracting parents who want to share the music they grew up with with their children and grandchildren.

“One young girl told us, ‘You guys are amazing. You’re hot. You’re like an old version of One Direction.’”
