JOLLY GYMNASTS: With their tumbling and acrobatic skills, seventh graders Brianna Steinburg, 12, and Ashley Clift, 12, won first place.

Students and teachers alike participated in a variety show, or Gong show, at Gorton Junior High School on Friday, with nearly 30 acts taking the stage. They held the show not only to entertain, but also to help raise funds for a foster child they recently adopted through Plan International USA, a non-profit organization that works with developing countries and emphasizes community engagement to address the needs of children throughout the world. The child, Maria, lives in Mexico and the students raised $360 for her, as well as nearly $150 for the school’s student council fund. To raise funds, students purchased pies for $2 apiece and got the opportunity to throw them at the faces of their favorite teachers. Seventh grader Jake O’Donnel, 12, pies his social studies teacher, Stephen “Bud” Andolfo.
