The CCRI Lady Knights basketball season ended recently when they lost to Monroe 83-70 in Region XXI/XV semifinals, but they did receive some good news since then. The team’s two captains – Allexia Barros (New Bedford, Mass.) and Ahnyyah Jackson (Hackensack, N.J.) – were named All-Region XXI.

Barros ended her illustrious CCRI career with 988 career points, No. 2 on the CCRI all-time scoring list behind only Jahira Smith, who scored 1,057 from 2011 to 2013. In Barros’ sophomore season, she was ranked No. 13 in scoring in Division II with 20.4 points per game. In addition, she ends her career as the single season three-point record-holder with 92 this season, breaking the record that was held by Cassie Novicky. Barros also holds the career three-point record with 156, besting Novicky’s 145.  In her sophomore campaign Barros was ranked No. 1 in the nation in three-pointers made per game with 3.7, while also being ranked No. 12 in three-point field goal percentage at 41.2-percent.

Barros also broke the CCRI single-game 3-point record with 11 threes versus Lincoln College of New England in the Lady Knights’ home opener, as she scored her career-high 35 points.  The single game record was formerly held by Ashley Fry, who made 10 verses Dean College in 2011.

Jackson also left her mark in the CCRI record books with 799 career points, ranking her No. 8 all-time. Jackson was ranked No. 21 in the nation in scoring averaging at 19.1 points per game. She scored her career-high in January at the CCRI Invitational, pouring in 34 points including a career-high seven three-pointers to help the Lady Knights defeat Monroe College in a dramatic 92-84 overtime victory.  Jackson also made her mark in the three-point category with 65 three-pointers this season, the third highest ever in a season. She also ended her career in third place on the program’s all-time three-point list by becoming only the third Lady Knight to sink 100 three-pointers for her career. She finished with exactly 100.

Jackson was ranked No. 11 in the nation in three-pointers per game this year with 2.7 and No. 13 in three-point field goal percentage at 41.1-percent.

Jernigan and Marchand earn All-Region honors

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team lost to Dean College in the Region XXI championship game this past Saturday to end it season, but the team received some positive news once that was over.

Two of their captains – Pat Marchand (Cranston) and Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, Conn.) – were named All-Region XXI.

Marchand was a two-year starter for the Knights and was second on the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game. He ranks No. 32 on the CCRI all-time scoring list with 698 career points, just behind Colin Burns (705) and ahead of Walt Edwards (682). Marchand led the Knights in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game. He also led the Knights in field goal percentage shooting at 54.3-percent.  Marchand was the most consistent player on the Knights in his sophomore campaign and helped the Knights with 10 double-doubles on the season, including when he scored his career-high 27 with 11 rebounds versus Genesee CC in December.

Jernigan transferred to CCRI from Monroe Community College. He led the Knights in scoring with 15.6 points per game. He also led the Knights in assisst with 5.5 per game, which ranked him No. 18 in the nation in Division II.

Jernigan led the Knights in steals per game, too, with 2.5, which ranked him No. 13 in the nation. He scored his career-high of 26 points versus Mercer County Community College in early January.

“Being named New England First-Team All-Region XXI is a fitting way for both Anthony Jernigan and Pat Marchand to end their seasons,” said CCRI head coach Rick Harris. “They were our two strongest leaders both on and off the court this season. They led us to a solid 18-win season, including outstanding wins over Lincoln College, Massasoit, Lackawanna, and DI Globe and ASA. Pat’s three-point play to defeat ASA in the closing seconds will be a victory I will always remember. Besides being outstanding players who put up solid numbers on a nightly basis, they were even better young men who I always enjoyed being around. They were dedicated, loyal and hardworking student-athletes who I could always count on. This honor is truly deserved by both.”
