Silver and bills have always carried more clout than pennies, but it’s pennies that are going to win bragging rights and a pizza party for one of five teams in the ongoing penny war at Aldrich Junior High School. The strategy is to end up with the most pennies; however, teams can undercut their competitors by donating silver and bills that are deducted from the team’s penny count. The war carries on though this week, when a winning team will be announced and the money donated to the House of Hope. Jean Johnson, executive director of the agency, said Aldrich has been a wonderful supporter over the years. Here, Aldrich art teacher Cara McKenney looks on as members of the student council size up (a matter of lifting each team canister) which of the teams could be in the lead before the coins are counted and rolled by teams of students, including this group (from left) Maeve Malloy, Sarah Olson, Lauren Sullivan, Olivia Kiernan and Isabella Arone.
